Washington High School Athletic Hall of Fame
Mission Statement
The Washington High School Athletic Hall of Fame exists to recognize and honor Washington High School Student Athletes, Coaches, Teams, and Sports Contributors for their achievements and/or contributions to the Washington High School Athletic Program.
Hall of Fame Committee
- The Washington High School Athletic Director will serve as the chairman.
- Prospective Hall of Fame committee members have to submit an application to the Athletic Director. The committee members will select up to nine (9) members who will serve a four (4) year term; committee members may succeed themselves. Ex officio positions are exempt from this bylaw.
- The committee will be made up of ex officio members (Washington Athletic Booster Club officer, Washington High School Athletic Director), current and past coaches and athletic directors (between 1-7), and community members (between 1-4).
- The Secretary to the Athletic Director will be a non-voting member and will be responsible for keeping historical files on all nominees.
- This committee will be responsible for choosing from those individuals and teams who have been recommended through an application process. They will use the criteria set forth by the committee to make this determination.
Nomination Criteria
- Athlete
An Athlete may be eligible for nomination into the WHS Athletic Hall of Fame after five years following graduation from WHS.
- Team
A team may be eligible for nomination into the WHS Athletic Hall of Fame after five years.
- Coach
A Coach may be eligible for nomination into the WHS Athletic Hall of Fame after having coached at WHS and being retired from coaching for at least three years.
- Sports Contributor - Blue Jay Pride
A Sports Contributor is eligible for nomination in an individual or group who has helped to develop and foster the growth of athletics in the WHS athletic community. Any Washington athlete, coach, community member, or group who has had a significant impact on the athletic community may also be eligible for nomination.
Special Nominees
Under unique circumstances, the Hall of Fame Committee has the ability to waive the number of years’ requirement and/or graduation requirement with ⅔ majority vote of the committee.
The following athletes, coaches, teams, and sports contributors candidates shall be eligible for special nominations:
❖ Selected into any National Hall of fame
❖ Achieved a world record
❖ Has participated in the Olympics and/or World Games representing the United States
❖ Played for or won an amateur national championship or professional championship on a team or as an individual
❖ Extenuating circumstances
Nomination Process
Nominations for consideration into the WHS Athletic Hall of Fame may be by committee members or by public nominations of people aged 18 years or older. Applications for nominations will be available in the Washington High School’s athletic office and online through the WHS athletic website - bja.washington.k12.mo.us
The number of inductees each year is as follows:
- Initial class (2021) 8-12 Inductees
- Next four years (2022 - 2025) 5-9 Inductees
- 2026 and onward 3-6 Inductees every two-three years
Basic Timeline
- January - Will begin accepting nominations through April 30
- November - Evaluate ceremony and process; Review by-laws
- May - Nominations go to committee & committee votes
- June - Announcement of new members (awards ordered)
- Once nominated, nominees will be active for five years. After five years those not selected will be placed on an inactive list and be eligible for re-nomination.
- A quorum must be present to vote.
- In the voting process, there will be two (2) votes taken. In the initial vote, each member will vote for 133% of the maximum number of inductees of the given year (i.e. inducting 12, vote for 16). The candidates with the most votes (i.e. top 16) will then be voted upon a second time. Each committee member will then vote for up to the maximum amount of inductees for the given year (i.e. 12). The maximum number of inductees with the most votes will then receive the WHS Athletic Hall of Fame award. However, in order to receive this award, each candidate must appear on a minimum of 50% of the voting committee’s ballots.
- Hall of Fame members can be removed from the WHS Athletic Hall of Fame for, but not limited to, conviction of a felony, behavior, or actions deemed not befitting of WHS Hall of Fame members as determined by the committee.
- Removal from the WHS Hall of Fame requires a ⅔ majority vote of the entire committee.
- Revisions to the by-laws shall be presented at the November meeting. Revisions shall be passed with a ⅔ vote of the entire committee.
